Deep in the Nandi Hills, 2 girls were born; Sundiata and Mawenzi. Mawenzi, the pretty one, was thought by the village to be blessed. She would lounge her days away, and laugh while her sister did all the work. Sundiata fetched water, gathered firewood, and did all the chores. She did not comb her hair, and would always speak too loudly and out of turn. The villagers did not like Sundiata. If they got too close to her, they felt a strange vibration, and they feared her. It was widely believed that Sundiata was cursed.
One night the Chief became very ill. The villagers danced and prayed to their gods that he would become well again, but there was not much hope. As the days went on, he got worse. Sundiata knew in her heart that she could help the chief, but the villagers would not let her near him. So she waited until everyone was asleep, and she crept up to his bedside. She laid her hands on him and she prayed. A warmth came over both of them, and the chief opened his eyes for the first time in days. At that very moment, Mawenzi opened the door and screamed. "Black Magic! She is using black magic on the chief! That is why he is dying!". Sundiata became upset and tried to stop her sister from yelling, but the more she tried, the worse it got. The chief was still holding on to Sundiata's hands, he felt her pain. It was too much. The healing powers that ran through her body could also be used to hurt, and they took over almost as if on their own. All of the persecution she had taken over the years had built up to this moment. Sundiata covered her eyes and screamed a most horrible sound. When she was able to open them, she was overcome with grief. The chief and Mawenzi were dead. Her wonderful gifts had turned against her.
The villagers would come soon. They would kill her. She had to leave, but where would she go? She did not mean for this to happen, she only wanted to help. She cried so deeply that the trees shivered and shook. She awoke something in the forest. The Spooky Girls had come to bring her home.
